LIFE Multi-AD 4 AgroSMEs: High performance multiphase anaerobic reactor for agroindustrial wastewater treatment

,Bondalti Water presents Multi-AD at the International Water Association’s ecoSTP 2023 congress on sustainable technologies

Jose B. Carbajo, head of R&D&I at BONDALTI WATER and coordinator of LIFE Multi-AD, participated in the 6th IWA International Congress on ecotechnologies for wastewater treatment, which was recently held in Girona.

The event was a forum for companies in the water sector, universities and technology centres to present the latest developments in the treatment, reuse and recovery of wastewater resources.
Through 170 papers and 220 presentations, more than 500 experts showed innovative, sustainable and intelligent solutions developed through research and innovation, such as the Multi-AD technology.

The Multi-AD solution, installed at Bodegas AGE, has demonstrated its capacity to reduce pollution in wastewater by more than 90%, reducing the electricity consumption associated with wastewater treatment by 186,000 kWh/year and the cost of sludge management by nearly 80%.
These facts make it possible to achieve a reduction in the operational costs of the water treatment system of more than a third and a reduction in the carbon footprint associated with wastewater treatment of more than 50%.

The Multi-AD solution, based on a high-performance multi-stage reactor, therefore allows companies in the food and beverage sector to improve their sustainability, both in economic and environmental terms

SIXTH PROGRESS MEETING OF THE LIFE MULTI-AD PROJECT

On 26th April, in the city of Logroño, the partners of the European project LIFE Multi-AD 4 AgroSMEs (LIFE17 ENV/ES/000331), made up of AEMA (Agua, Energía y Medioambiente Servicios Integrales S.L.U.), I&S (Institutions & Stratégies), ITAINNOVA (Instituto Tecnológico de Aragón), SIS (Societatea de Inginerie Sisteme S. A.) and EGA (Energygreen Gas Almazán S.L.), to show the progress and results of this initiative, which is demonstrating the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of a high performance multi-stage anaerobic reactor.

During the meeting, the results of the different actions developed during the project were presented.

In addition, a showroom of the demonstration prototype located at Bodegas AGE (Fuenmayor, La Rioja) was held. This technical visit had two objectives, the first one was for the partners to see the final result of the installation of the demonstration unit of the LIFE Multi-AD technological solution and the second one was to take images for the making of the final video of the project.

LIFE MULTI-AD PRESENT IN THE FIFTH MASTERCLASS ON WASTEWATER

Jose B. Carbajo, Head of AEMA R+D+i Projects, presented on the 16th of February the technological solution LIFE Multi-AD within the MasterClass entitled “Technology MBR for the treatment of urban and industrial wastewater”.
Multi-AD technology was shown as an effective and efficient solution for roughing organic matter from wastewater with high loads such as those generated by warehouses. The synergistic coupling of the anaerobic to the aerobic process achieves a significant reduction of the operational costs associated with the purification of these industrial effluents as consequence of the decrease in energy consumption and sludge management.

LIFE MULTI-AD continues to build a network with technologies synergistic to the anaerobic water treatment process.

The presentation brought together the work carried out at ITAINNOVA on anaerobic digestion reactors and the biogas plants that comprise them, Among these works they presented our project «High performance multi-stage anaerobic reactor for wastewater treatment of agri-food SMEs (LIFE Multi-AD 4 Agro SMEs) and Unlocking new VALUE from urban bioWASTE (VALUEWASTE)«. These two projects are examples of how ITA can contribute to the design, scaling and optimisation of these systems.

The main objective of the LIFE Multi-AD 4 Agro SMEs is the design of a high performance multiphase anaerobic reactor producing methane-rich biogas, tailor-made for wastewater treatment of agri-food SMEs.
This development, based on anaerobic digestion, improves energy efficiency, reduces sludge generation and adapts to the low volumes typical of this type of SME. As the main contribution, ITAINNOVA has provided its experience in the development of Digital Twins to carry out the industrial-scale design of the anaerobic reactor that has been built and is in the experimental phase at Bodegas AGE.

VALUEWASTE has developed a system for the valorisation of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste through the development of three integrated value chains for the production of proteins for animal feed and nutrients such as N and P for use as fertiliser. One of the tasks carried out by ITA has been to improve the energy efficiency of the plant, which has been achieved through the integration of renewable heat and electricity sources.

About the project

The main objective of the LIFE Multi-AD 4 AgroSMEsproject is to develop and industrialize an innovative fully automated system for the treatment of wastewater generated by small and medium-sized companies from the Food & Drink (F&D) sector. This technology is based on the design of high-performance anaerobic multiphase reactor patented by AEMA and its production will be personalized according to the specific needs of each client.
